A Behind-the-Scenes Look at “Military Makeover” in Wisconsin
At ABC Supply, we’re full of American Pride. In fact, one of our Core Values is honoring and respecting those who serve our great nation. When we heard about “Military Makeover,” a reality television program that provides surprise home repairs for veterans, we knew we had to get involved to help honor a deserving military family.
The veteran we supported was Steve Wojcik, who served in the military for 20 years and received a Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal and Army Commendation Medal. Steve was given an honorable discharge and medical retirement in 2005 after suffering a serious injury in Iraq. He now works as a Wisconsin State Trooper and was nominated for “Military Makeover” by a coworker.
Steve lives in Strum, Wisconsin, with his wife, Terri, and their three teenage daughters. The family’s home was in need of some updates — the roof leaked, and they had trouble with water in their basement. It was clear that the Wojcik family was the perfect recipient for one of the “Military Makeover” show’s free home repairs for veterans.
“Military Makeover” then reached out to us for help. We and a number of different vendors gladly donated building materials for the roofing, siding, gutters, doors and accessories. We were excited to work on the renovations with some of our contractor customers, who installed the donated building materials:
- Ledegar Roofing from La Crosse, Wisconsin, installed the roof.
- C.S. Construction based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, put the siding in place.
- Country Seamless Gutters, located in Hatfield, Wisconsin, put gutters on the home.
Plus, 15 associates from the National Support Center in Beloit, as well as the La Crosse and Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, branches jumped at the chance to help. Local veterans and community members also lent a hand.
In addition to a new roof, gutters and siding, the Wojcik family’s home received a total renovation of its kitchen and bathrooms. The basement and garage were also updated, and new landscaping included a fire pit area for the family to spend time in together.
After a week and a half away at a campground this past September, the family returned for the unveiling of its newly remodeled home. There were tears all around as the family explored its updated space — no one could believe how much the house had changed in just 10 days.
