BELOIT, Wis. – For the sixth consecutive year, building products distributor ABC Supply Co. Inc. has been honored with the Gallup® Great Workplace Award, which recognizes the best-performing workforces worldwide. The company is one of only 27 in the world to receive the 2012 award. It also is one of only three six-time winners, having received the award every year since its inception.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2012, ABC Supply is the largest wholesale distributor of roofing in the United States and one of the nation’s largest distributors of siding, windows and other select exterior building products.
The awards were presented during the Gallup Summit Spring 2012, held recently in Omaha, Neb. ABC Supply’s Chief Executive Officer and President David Luck was a featured presenter during the conference, speaking about how the company’s core values have driven engagement at ABC Supply and fueled the company’s growth.
Validating “Employee-first” Approach
According to Luck, the Gallup Great Workplace Award is validation of the “employee-first” approach that ABC Supply has always taken.
“Our associates have always been – and always will be – the key to ABC Supply’s success. They make it happen,” he said. “When Ken and Diane Hendricks founded ABC Supply, their vision was that ABC Supply would become the best company to work for in America. The Gallup Great Workplace Award shows that we continue to do the right things to achieve that dream.”
To Diane Hendricks, co-founder and chairman, the high levels of employee performance and engagement that the Gallup Great Workplace Award honors – and ABC Supply’s resulting success – illustrate what is possible when a company and its employees pursue the American Dream.
“In this company, if you work hard, are willing to learn and have a can-do spirit, there’s nothing you can’t do,” she said. “That entrepreneurism and rewarding of individual effort and achievement are what have always made ABC Supply great.”
The Gallup Great Workplace Award is based on rigorous statistical research. Companies considered for the honor were evaluated by a panel of workplace experts who compared each company’s results to results from other companies all over the world. The award is based on multiple criteria, including response rates, overall engagement levels and evidence of engagement’s impact on performance.
Luck Speaks on Leading with Core Values
In a presentation titled “Leading with Core Values,” Luck shared ABC Supply’s story, explaining how being founded on – and continually living by – a set of strong core values helped the company meet the challenges presented by the recent recession and continuing housing slump, overcome the internal crisis of the death of co-founder Ken Hendricks, and seize the opportunity to acquire one of its largest competitors. He also discussed how the stability of an unchanging set of core values has allowed the company to embrace change and to grow by acquiring and successfully integrating other distributors.
